Why do I get a Windows security message when I try to install the desktop application?

You may be prompted about installing an application from an "unknown publisher". There is (of course) a cost to becoming a "known publisher", and in order to keep the app free I have forgone that cost. Take my assurance for what it is worth that the app is genuine and contains no malicious code.

Does the desktop application work over the internet?

It sure does! Check out Internet Sync for details.

Can we save the main XML file on a cloud platform or server and have multiple devices access it at once?

Sort of. You can absolutely store the file anywhere that fasionable files are stored. That said, while one copy of the desktop application has it open, that application will be writing to it without reading first. This works fine when only one copy of the program is writing to the file. However if you try to have it open on multiple machines at once, they'll start overwriting eachothers changes. A lot. If you want network functionality, please explore the "Network Settings" section in the app (version 4.8+), or the web-based verison in development now.

Can I email the file around to others?

Absolutely! In fact it was designed intentionally to produce a single small (human readable) file with all the core information.

You can 100% email any PDFs generated by the system wherever you need them to go. This hopefully makes conferring with other managers, level 2 managers, or EMCR regional managers easier!

Why did it break / crash / set fire to my cat?

As you've no doubt experienced, computer programs are complex things, and the more complex something is, the easier it is to break. I strive to test features internally and with a small group of users to shake out the bugs, but no program survives contact with users entirely unscathed. Before getting a general release, all versions of the desktop app are tested out on a complex mock search or live task.
